Introduction about Nuclear Science and Engineering Sector
Nuclear engineering, a field of engineering that deals with the science and application of nuclear and radiation processes. These processes include the release, control, and utilization of nuclear energy. It also involves the production, use of radiation and radioactive materials for applications in research, industry, medicine, and national security. Nuclear engineering is based on fundamental principles of physics and mathematics that describe nuclear interactions and the transport of neutrons and gamma rays. PUSPATI TRIGA Reactor known as RTP is the only nuclear research reactor in Malaysia. RTP is a pool-type reactor, where the reactor core rests at the bottom of an aluminum tank which surrounded by a biological shield made of high-density concrete. The reactor uses solid fuel elements from uranium zirconium-hydride (UZrH1.6) type with 1MW thermal power. Demineralized water acts both as coolant and neutron moderator, while its reflector is made of graphite. The reactor was designed to effectively implement the various fields of basic nuclear science and education. The courses of the NSE sector are constructed to cater the needs of Nuclear Engineering environment in Malaysia by offering from basics to advanced topics in the science of nuclear engineering and application, communication, as well as in safety, security and safeguards (3S).
